Is it possible to make the author role for wordpress a paid function (pay to post) with this software?

    Thanks.

You could create a new product called author, and then add that user role in in the product setting. However, that would be global and not pay per post.
It think there are some other 3rd party wordpress plugins that allow that functionality.

and in that instance, would the wordpress blog itself still be public? (if I didn't protect it?)

I offer marketing services on a subscription basis, and some of the levels include being able to write on our public blog. Currently we manually create a WordPress account for each client, using the same login info they have used when they register with aMember. However it occurred to me that we might be able to do this automatically with the Wordpress plugin for aMember.

Yeah, the amember plugin will copy the user info over to wordpress.
