I have maxmind set up and when a user creates an account, their IP is correctly identified. But EU VAT is being applied when the user is outside of Europe.
    • If I check the option in EU VAT: Catalog Prices Include Tax, then at checkout, the total price is shown with a proportion of VAT.
    • If I uncheck the option, then the VAT is added to the price
Either way, VAT is showing on checkout for non-European customers.

How can I stop this and only apply VAT to people within Europe?

I know that I can ask for their country in an address field but why isn't maxmind already identifying that they are outside of EU?

In any case, I would prefer not to have to ask for country because I have free memberships too and I don't want to put off people from signing up because I am asking for information which seems unnecessary.

    thanks for your help

One option would be to create separate signup forms for your free and paid products. That way, you can strip out the unnecessary details from the free form, but keep country etc for VAT in the paid form.

    Cheers
