Why not simply protect the content according to some other attribute the associate members all have? For example, we often use what I call 'dummy products' which are assigned to specific groups of users. Once these are set up, we can use access rules to prevent or force any other content as we need. So - create a product called 'Associate Membership' and make it lifetime. Bulk assign it to your associate members only (I assume you've got a way of identifying them all, such as having them in a user group?) and then go to 'Protect Content' and add a file. Upload your PDF and set the Access Permissions as available only if you've got an active subscription to 'Associate Membership' product... No password needed (therefore no 'i've lost my password' issues), complete control over who gets it, and for how long. You can even limit downloads...
